Prominent Cleveland architects Benjamin Hubbell and Dominick Benes designed the museum’s original building. Probably best known for the Wade Memorial Chapel in Lake View Cemetery that features a decorative interior designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the company also commissioned Tiffany to design a marble and glass mosaic fireplace to greet clients in the main room of their offices in the Citizens Building in downtown Cleveland. These offices were later occupied by the Premier Farnell Corporation, who donated the fireplace surround to the museum through Morton L. Mandel. It now graces the archives and special collections reading room in the Ingalls Library, providing a fitting backdrop for researchers of museum history, the social background of the major art movements of the 20th century, and the social and cultural history of the Cleveland area.

Archive collections include administrative records of museum offices; audio and visual recordings of museum programs and events; oral histories; preliminary drawings, renderings, and works of art by artists represented in the museum collection; and a small number of manuscript collections from persons related to, but not employed by, the museum. First-time users must complete a registration form. Certain collections are restricted, although specific information may be provided by the archives director from restricted collections.
